The Russo Report

Digital or Paper

Back in 2021, I snapped the following picture as I packed my notebook archive away in preparation for a move.

That stack has grown a lot since then. I've added pocket notebooks, other brands, different sizes, and many formats and methods.

You see, I like to experiment with my style of journaling. I've tried just about every method I've encountered online, but always find myself coming back to simplicity over structure.

Life, much like nature, has seasonality. That, in turn, leans itself to changes in my journaling needs. Sometimes I want to be specific and capture everything! Other times I can barely remember to jolt down a sentence in my 5 year journal.

I now find myself in a season of life that’s making it difficult to keep up with my pen & paper rituals. So, inspired by Herman's Plain text journaling methods, I’m once again going to try a digital format for a while.

My plan is to transition my daily journaling to Apple’s Journal app, now that they’ve released a MacOS version. I'm not sure how the experience will go, but we'll see.

I’ll still write in my 5 year Midori, since I’m three years in. I also plan to continue using a pocket notebook to capture everything on my mind throughout the day when I'm away from the keyboard.

The ease of typing in the morning and/or evening is appealing during this current season. I hope it brings me more clarity, and less stress about not keeping up with my notebooks.
